Are there known performance issues with ipfs add-ing many nodes (>10,000) to a repo on an (encrypted) HDD? On IPFS Kubo 0.27.0 Linux 64-bit, recursively adding a directory containing many files takes a while. The progress bar frequently freezes or hangs for a minute or more, even when using badgerds and/or setting datastore sync to false in config.

But only on HDD. On SSD, the hangs are much less noticeable or non-existent. Is the progress bar just hanging when IPFS flushes to disk, or do I have a configuration issue I should ask #ipfs-community-help about?

Describe ipfs in a fun way, pls?!
  • awesomeQA

IPFS is like a vast galaxy of computers where your files live, instead of a single space station. It's decentralized, making it resistant to alien attacks (censorship) and asteroid impacts (single points of failure). Every file has its own unique fingerprint, ensuring it remains pure and untampered. Using a cosmic map, IPFS beams files across the galaxy at light speed, especially popular files cached by friendly aliens. It can time travel, keeping different versions of the same file, and it's eco-friendly, storing identical files only once. Even offline, you can access your files, like having a cosmic library in your spaceship. Built by a federation of interstellar developers, IPFS is an evolving universe with endless possibilities for exploration and creation [1].

    hi
  • i have this error when i click in my token id NFT
    504 Gateway timeout
The gateway is taking too long to fetch your content. This could be due to several reasons:

The CID does not exist in the IPFS network
The host that contains the CID has gone offline, is on a slow network connection or overloaded
You might try waiting for a while and trying again. To prevent having this problem in the future, why not self-host a node? You will be able to get all the content in the IPFS network straight from its source! For more information see the implementations page. You might also want to have a look at the IPFS companion browser extension which will allow your browser to seamlessly fetch content from your local node.

    How you can proceed:

Verify the URL and try again.
Self-host and run an IPFS client that verifies your data.
Try diagnosing your request with the IPFS diagnostic tools.
    Inspect the CID or DAG.

  • To the best of my knowledge people that want the fastest ingestion possible always use cluster over kubo.
There is a graph of ipfs distributions on the website, and who uses what. This could give you a better idea of how people who actually know make these decisions.

  • operating a cluster will not improve this UX probably, in my opinion.
  • Unless you yourself are attempting to operate the equivalent of a pinning service or something meaningfully similar, then its probably over kill. Or maybe you want to distribute your pinset across many nodes, great then cluster is for you. It is not a way of improving your IO baseline.

  • Ok. do you know how to link to a different CID in a website?
  • There are a couple things you might mean by this, but, yes.
  • There is nothing unique about the http links in ipfs websites, even when they point to other ipfs websites. at this layer its just an html href that points to a DNS name like every other link on the planet. the only difference is that typically you use a dns link.
if you are trying to speed up page load, maybe you have images linked locally within the cid dir, maybe you have them as separate links. depends on your application.

I pinned some CID text files. Some show up a day later in a browser, others do not. Why? How can I guarantee it will pin?
  • @sevenrats:matrix.org
    S
the best way to guarantee that a pin will be available is to create a two way peering between the storage node and the requesting node.
  • that way the connection manager of both ends will protect the connection and reestablish it if it fails. you can do one way peering as well but its probably much less reliable
  • SimplifiedPrivacy.com
so you're saying 2 VPS, 1 pinning. and a 2nd one requesting it constantly? and what's the linux command to request the CID?

  • What I've done here is go to google and type "ipfs kubo peering peers" and I've instantly gotten a link here:
    https://github.com/ipfs/kubo/blob/master/docs/config.md#peeringpeers
This robustly describes the process and rationale
  • A cool thing about ipfs is that you don't actually need to enter the 'Addrs' kv pair. If each entry only consists of an ID, then kubo's routers will be used to discover the peers address, and then the connection will be protected once formed.

well that's just you formatting the config wrong. no worries there.
  • a good way to avoid that is to deal with the config entirely in a scripting language.
  • its not necessarily accurate to say its resource intensive. really not a terribly huge amount of work is being done, usually. its more accurate to say that kubo is highly concurrent so running it on a single core will produce undesirable operating conditions.
  • At low power this concurrency brings other aspects of the implementation under scrutiny though. For example even though the 4-core raspberry pi 4 with 8 gig of ram is more than enough horsepower on paper to run kubo, the shoddy memory controller creates bottlenecks and you wind up spending huge amounts of your time waiting for concurrency
  • like huge huge amounts of time. 20-30 % of all time is spent waiting for the concurrency model

To address the issue of your image hosted with NFT storage being blocked by Cloudflare, it's recommended to make fewer concurrent requests to the service, as this is a rate limiting issue. Additionally, introducing caching on your side could help mitigate the problem by reducing the number of requests made [1].

I recently got introduced to IPFS, and it seems interesting

but it is definitely different than whatever I was normally used to, and I am having a problem fully grasping how it works

I got the main idea, I think, but not the details

I have many questions going through my mind, and not sure where to ask

It seems from what I am reading, IPFS is more resilient but not anonymous

So that confuses me... If not anonymous, does it make it easy for nodes to be taken down, which defeats the idea of being more resilient?

Or am I just misunderstanding something here?

Is it possible to setup a wordpress or wordpress like website with it?

Is it possible to setup peertube on it or something similar?

If this is the wrong place to ask such questions, please excuse me, and if you could forward me to the right place

    Thanks

Please run IPFS Desktop or look up documentation for command line for IPFS ... after you install your own IPFS node. Which you will need to keep running to host the data.
  • mainiak_cz
So that confuses me... If not anonymous, does it make it easy for nodes to be taken down, which defeats the idea of being more resilient?
IPFS is as resilient as much you are willing to host your own data, or pay for some service to host it for you - by using pinning service.

And if you look at documentation (or at other posts around), you can see how CLI can be used to find real IP addresses. If you need anonymity, you will need to take your own steps and respect the law in your country - including the content you are hosting.

Is it possible to setup a wordpress or wordpress like website with it?
In short, NO. You will need to use static web page generator, and then YES, you can host your site.

    Cheers

  • So that confuses me...

    Cheers

So I would others to also be able to share their comments and videos

This is why I was thinking of peertube, but I was hoping for more resiliency and anonymity in terms of location, not person

I am not worried about the content itself, because it is just normal content, but some might find political in nature

Maybe a better way to think about it is what platform can journalists use to protect themselves and be free and open in terms of what they want to say

    If that makes sense

I did it! ipfs add was using sha2-256 by default, while CID X was using blake2b-256. So I added --hash blake2b-256 and got the exact same hash from the local file.

The classical way it's meant to be used, you download your complete file and then verify it, which sucks for P2P no one wants to download 2GB just to realise one byte is wrong and have to throw all of it away and restart the download (a liar node would be extremely hard to catch).

There is a theoretical idea to download files backward and due to how SHA256 is done you could verify that way.
But performance would be worst than a proper merkle-tree and you wouldn't have random reads ability.
  • Average Dude
You can't hash a file and generate a CID from that

I don't see why SHA256 is any more correct than unixfs with 256KiB chunk size and balanced 177 links. Except the first one sucks for P2P the second does not.

  • the magic incantation for hex sha256 with 32 bytes is f01551220 you put f01551220 then your sha256 hash
  • note: kubo will only accept to fetch the files <=2MiB~<=4MiB that way, after that it has trust issues because sha256 is not a great hash function.
Someone could implement backward hashing but the better thing would be to use a modern merkle-tree hash function like blake3 or use a repeatable unixfs chunker (like the kubo defaults).
The sha256 backward verification is only really useful for systems that deploy content addressing widely already but in centralised solutions and where they don't care about the trust issue (like docker) and making them distributed without having to update all the hashes everywhere.

  • People use this in various context and don't exactly on what that should mean.

The thing that make consensus is that if you have a CID you can download content and verify it.
Like a .torrent file (or more accurately a magnet link since you have the hash of the chunk/leaves (mean the same thing) proofs).

If you can go the other way repeatably is a big maybe, it depends.

Most application only need one way proofs, if you are making an app from scratch you shouldn't need two way proofs, you use CIDs everywhere and it just works.

The main usecase for the file ā†’ cid proofs is when you already have a system that use hashes and want to be upgraded to P2P (imagine sharing docker sha256 hashes over docker).
This let you reuse the same hash truth databases you already have.

But for a new app you store CIDs instead of raw sha256 hashes in your truth database and you dodge the problem completely.

  • See the smart thing to do is to capture the output of rsync --verbose to learn all the new files (or use a golang rsync impl and handle files directly without writing them as-is on disk).
The bruteforce way I did it is to make a 2GiB .json file with the mtime and CID of every node in the repo and scan that after each rsync.

(NAR is a stable TAR derivative that always returns the same hash after storing contents - especially directories)

  • For inspiration I can tell you how I implement my debian / ubuntu / arch linux / ... repo (which is down right now until I write a more efficient IPFS server). Basically I used to publish IPFS hashes*, and people just trust that I'm not lying. However it's not as bad as it sounds because my IPFS hashes are on top of the existing aptitude, pacman, ... keyring verification. So I'm technically no better than any other mirror, I can lie inside a 200MB package, and you will realise after the fact my hashes are flaky and move to an other mirror. However because the IPFS hashes are a merkle tree then it can fetch them P2P from anyone without trust issues. *I never made it good enough that I advertised it to anyone else.
  • debian + ubuntu + arch total around 5TB.
  • I'm tired, I'll see later, if you have questions about implementation or using the boxo library you probably want to ask in #kubo-boxo-dev in https://filecoin.io/slack, the current boxo maintainers should look more closely.
  • this channel might be bridged on matrix too, I don't know

Yeah, so in short there is a way to do this that you can read more about at https://github.com/aschmahmann/mdinc. I haven't been able to put much time into this, but if you give a little more context about what you're trying/willing to do I can help out more here. Some examples: ā€¢ Where are you hoping to host the data if doing p2p hosting (e.g. is everyone who wants to contribute going to run a sidecar that hosts the data, are you expecting people to use standard IPFS pinning services, etc.) ā€¢ Are you ok running some custom code (e.g. in Go, but whatever) to do the downloading here, or does it have to be something more widely used (e.g. kubo)? If you're able to write some Go code to do this I can likely do some engaging around setting up the libraries so they work and/or make it easier to contribute. While I have a couple projects I'd like to integrate this with (mostly existing package manager types) I haven't had time so if you're doing the integration work and giving library feedback that makes things easier (although more likely to be a weekends kind of thing for me).

You may want to talk to the Guix folk, they also played around with an IPFS substitute system a few years ago.

Hello, In a project where we use IPFS, I need to send files encrypted. In this case, it keeps generating a new CID for me constantly. How can I prevent this? Normally, after uploading a file, if I update the file, it should take the new part and show the whole file. However, in an encrypted file, how will it check the file integrity? What can I do in this case? Can you help me?
